Why Discoverability Matters More Than Ever on Roblox

Roblox uses an algorithm-driven marketplace to handle its massive library of user-made games, but this system has significant issues, particularly in how poorly its search and recommendation systems surface and present content, making discovery inefficient and inconsistent.

When it comes to online game stores, especially the big ones, profit margins are always important, and the ability to get the products seen, downloaded, or, in the case of platforms like Roblox, experienced. In order to maximize the use of marketing and sales (whether by product sales or Advertising revenue), the search system and the algorithm it uses is usually geared in rooting out the products or experiences with the most hits, meaning, they get a lot (or the most) of attention, sales, and people clicking and experiencing them in order to make the most out of them. It's what the customers want, so why not make it easier for them to find it?

Again, on the surface, this looks to be the most feasible and profitable solution, as games or experiences that are already popular will garner a guaranteed market audience for sure. Unfortunately, Greed can only go so high because even greed has its own saturation point. The algorithm has been programmed and embedded in the system, which will follow said instructions no matter what, searching for the most popular games with the most sales, the most online interaction, the most gamers experiencing them, and so on and so forth.

Simplified, to the Algorithm, it's just a numbers game. Now, what happens when these products or experiences become saturated, and those who might buy them have already done so? The algorithm will look for the next game at the top of the list, and if that one has already been saturated, it will move down again. Efficient, Yes, Effective, No. Profits will remain at a particular level or may stagnate because the products with the greatest sales potential are usually at the bottom of the list.

The Obstacles to Discoverability

To get to those good potential products at the bottom part of the Millions list, discoverability is the key, and the Algorithm looks more like a manager who prefers to cater to the already popular and rich products on the list, who stay on the top, while the potential new ones struggle to get the needed attention.

In the case of Roblox, the above is not only the reason for its current discoverability dilemma. Roblox currently has a huge problem with “Slop”. These are games and experiences that are clones and copycats of actual popular games, some even direct copies of the original, and published with a different title. This clogs up the system as they, too, get in line and usually end up pushing the newer and original experiences further down the line. Worst, they have no intrinsic value to contribute to the platform and overall experience of the user community. They just take up space that is intended for a much more ambitious new creation.

Number 3, inaccurate searches of the Algorithm. The ever-powerful algorithm, already flawed from the get-go, will misperceive search keywords and usually pull up Slop games and experiences instead. Based on experience title or the algorithmic criteria of bowing to the numbers, the search pulls up slop after slop after slop. If a product is an exact, inferior copy of the original and the customer already has the original, then there's no need to bother. A total waste of data cycles, way to go “Master Control Program”. The users should always come first.

Lack of communication, the addressing of feedback, and transparency. A management problem is causing many developers to complain that their game’s visibility and rating suddenly drop overnight. In a deeply embedded algorithmic search system, a slight change or recode may trigger a Domino effect that affects everything. Games barely getting the visibility they need may lose the small advantage they have built.

Improving the algorithm may cause side effects that users of the system may not welcome. An example is the reduced effectiveness of paid ads. Traditionally sponsored games may lose their advantage, particularly when search traffic is high. Also, the removal of the “Less Than 13” age-targeted ads, in Roblox’s effort to raise the audience age range (as there are many adults frolicking around Roblox as well), may make it harder to target kids to join the platform.

There are many other reasons, but these are the major ones today. All of them can either affect or be affected by the search process, and in a gargantuan warehouse, lined with shelves upon shelves with millions of products stacked upon each other, it might just take more than a flawed AI management system to get it at least “fairly” right with each and every search.

Upgrading the System

To alleviate the current discoverability situation and perhaps to acknowledge customer complaints, Roblox has initiated several steps and upgrades to its service to either make up for or, if possible, fix the algorithm’s shortcomings. “The user’s needs come first, and data cycles should not be wasted” (even “Ares” would attest to that). So, here are some of the steps Roblox has undertaken.

To help smaller and newer game developers, Roblox has upgraded (altered) its “Recommended For You” (RFY) Algorithm to root out games not by number but by the length of the game or experience time. The longer the game is played, the more visible it becomes to the searchbot. Quality instead of numbers.

Search according to Theme and Genre, making it easier to find specific types/kinds of games. Also, the homepage is being upgraded for gamer personalization, with features like “Today’s Picks” aimed at gamers' specific interests. As for Advertising, the system is being updated to target specific audiences so that ads are not wasted and will improve the Return on Investment (ROI). A better reporting system is also introduced.

“Roblox Moments,” which is an on-platform and short-form video feed, was launched in 2025 to provide short introductions (recorded gameplay) of experiences for gamers to watch and join if they like it. Also, a referral system has been implemented to incentivize developers to invite friends, acquaintances, and even relatives to join the platform, encouraging more organic social growth.

Finally, Roblox is actively addressing the “Slop” problem, filtering out the bad actors from the platform. Titles that use clickbait, useless clones that take up space, low-quality experiences that also take up useless space, and others like them. Hopefully, by eliminating this kind of garbage, more room can be made for the more useful ones.
