Roblox Reality Could Push Roblox Beyond “Kids Game” Stereotypes
The Roblox community as a whole is currently in a mixed uproar with the recent announcement of "Roblox Reality", an AI tool developed to transform the platform's traditional blocky, cartoon-like worlds into photorealistic game realities. The reactions have gone both ways: some see it as an innovative move with future possibilities, while many consider it a contradiction of what makes "Roblox" special and different in the first place.
Roblox through the Years
Roblox has been officially around since 2006, well, in gamer timeline, like forever. Over the years, the gaming platform has grown and advanced in many ways, with registered users growing to Millions in a span of a few years. What's more, Roblox is accessible worldwide, with large portions of its gaming audience originating from Southeast Asia and other distant continents as well.
Roblox has defined the definition of diversity when it comes to online and social gaming. Regardless of age, gender, race, creed, or anything else that separates people, the platform has become an all-in-one melting pot for gamers the world over. Whoever or whatever you are, chances are, there will always be a Roblox experience right up your alley, and something you can truly enjoy.
Roblox is diverse in terms of reach as well, as the platform is accessible on Windows OS and Mac OS, and on Android and iOS. Whatever modern device you have to connect to the Internet and play games, chances are (again), that you can play games on Roblox. This is how widespread Roblox has become over the years: the platform is not only a gaming site but also a social hub for Internet users and a market and sharing hub for developers and content creators. In fact, the platform encourages and rewards content creators for their site uploads, whether it's a game, an accessory, or any other content.
So, as far as games and gaming platforms go, Roblox has done such an incredible job not only by providing online gaming but by building one of the biggest (if not the biggest) online gaming communities to date.
The Need to Expand
However, just as a life cycle of a product, a company, and even a game goes, stagnation will rear its ugly head sooner or later. Everyone grows, reaches their peak, grows old, and passes away; such is the cycle of life for all things, whether alive or not. But practically everyone is aware of how old the "Statue of Liberty" and the "Eiffel Tower" are, and they're still standing today. In this, maintenance and progression go a long way toward keeping the ball rolling (so to speak), and the same goes for Roblox.
By gaming standards, Roblox is starting to need a cane to walk, and is coughing and hobbling due to age. However, as a gaming platform, Roblox can regenerate itself to keep going indefinitely by continually progressing, adapting, and expanding. This may mean new features, new services, new content, and anything that keeps gamers (of succeeding generations) happy and coming back for more.
To this, Roblox today has announced a new and innovative feature that it is scheduled to implement into the platform to make it more interesting than ever. This comes in the form of "Roblox Reality", an AI feature that will enable Roblox experience developers to craft "Photorealistic" gaming environments using the current Roblox Studio game engine. In simple terms, it will add a super high-fidelity video Upsampler for developers to use to create near-realistic gaming worlds (think Skyrim) on the platform.
The purpose is not only to bring new life to the old and aged blocky, since time immemorial, Roblox, but to pull in other mid to hard-core gamers of this kind of Photorealistic adventure games to do their exploring or dungeon hacking on Roblox. If Roblox can offer realistic game experiences like many AAA games today, the potential to attract gamers beyond the existing Roblox community and ever-loyal kids is huge.
Unfortunately, there will be some drawbacks that cannot be helped, and these may affect the current and active gaming community who love Roblox for exactly what it is.
Sticking with Tradition
To this development, the overall community is divided. On one side is progress, with newer, better-looking games; on the other, gamers questioning the need to do it at all. At this point, even if the move attracts new gamers to the Roblox platform, games imbued with Photorealism will require more memory and more powerful PCs to run. Regardless, they can be made available to community members who have the capability to play and experience them, as Roblox is currently accessible and playable on low-end computers.
The biggest issue with many Roblox followers is that the move would erase the unique difference Roblox has as compared to current-day modern games. The blocky, low-quality graphics are what endeared Roblox to the masses in the first place, and changing Roblox in any way to look like today’s other current games will make Roblox experiences no different from playing other AAA (and even Indie) titles. To many, it does not make sense.
Regardless, Roblox is Roblox, and gamers the world over have come to love it the way it is. Using Photorealistic AI generation may prove to be an advantage as long as it continually adds to the dearly loved Roblox characters and environment that makes the platform stand out from the rest. In essence, it could surely push Roblox beyond the “kids' game” stereotype the platform is usually identified with. As for pulling in more diverse gamers, only time will tell.
