No Coding? No Problem: Roblox's AI Tool Builds Games for You
Around twenty years ago, Roblox set sail with a simple idea: “You make the game”. 132 million active daily users agreed, whether by playing user-made titles or publishing a handcrafted game for the rest of the market to enjoy.
And now, Roblox announces that game creation is something accessible to a wider range of users — even to those who don’t know code. As long as someone has an idea, all the technical nitty-gritty can be taken care of by a mobile-first, prompt-based creation tool called Build.
What to expect:
Build expands the creator sphere beyond desktop software. The app is expected to have all the necessary tools for anyone to come up with an idea using the mobile app. No pre-downloads, no pre-requisites: straight to idea creation as easy as keying in prompts.
Roblox, together with generative AI models, transforms single prompts into interactive spaces, explorable environments, gameplay mechanics, character systems, and sound effects. It’s perfect for anyone with a good idea but is hesitant to try because of the coding requirements.
The resulting game shares the same backend data, AI history, and asset models as Roblox Studio. Advanced users can draft the Experience on their phones, even at work or during a commute, and later open Roblox Studio on desktop to fine-tune the Lua code, level design, and aesthetics.
What Robloxians can get out of it:
A full game is achievable in four steps: prompt, refine, playtest, and share. Single-sentence prompts like “a cozy platforming game in an urban environment with jump obstacles” transform into a full Experience with the core mechanics locked in. A user can add more features and refine elements using follow-up prompts, invite a few friends as additional testers, and come back to the Build app to prompt in more refinements.
Asset and logic generation is fully automated; plain English instructions can transform into 3D assets, textures, lighting setups, and gameplay logic. App users won’t need to learn or pick up code lingo or similar jargon to come up with a fun idea at a faster rate.
Built-in AI models analyze generated games to detect bugs, study playtest analytics, and recommend gameplay enhancements to help a creator polish the experience before sharing it with friends. Having a trusty group of people to become the first batch of players greatly helps with additional feedback from a gaming perspective.
Build also promises a streamlined studio-to-catalog experience by bypassing complex publishing menus. Aspiring Creators can bring their ideas to life as published links, all within the Roblox ecosystem.
The app is set to go on a slow rollout. New Zealand Robloxians aged 9 and older who passed age verification can use some of Build’s features as early as 28 July. Roblox Corporation also promises that Experiences made for users 16 and up will go through a series of safety checks before the games are playable on the platform. Game creation and the accuracy of AI system detection in preventing games of dubious mechanics are expected to improve over time. Roblox’s discovery systems will still highlight the most-played and longest-played games, preventing AI slop from flooding Experience choices.
